Due to its high chemical stability, the biodegradation of benzene is the most challenging amongst hydrocarbons. While oxygen-dependent oxygenases are employed by aerobic bacteria to overcome the energy barrier, the mechanism of anaerobic benzene biodegradation is still enigmatic.
