Biorefineries are set to become an important agent in the shift towards a circular economy due to their potential to valorize organic wastes into marketable products. Anaerobic fermentations yielding volatile fatty acids (VFA) are a key process in this biorefinery paradigm as VFA act as intermediates between the organic wastes and the final biorefinery products. However, the development of a new bioprocess based on mixed-culture fermentation is an extremely challenging task. Targeting the desired ...

Model-based design of a biorefinery platform to valorise agrifood organic waste into odd-chain volatile fatty acids integrating technical and environmental criteria
The conversion of organic wastes by anaerobic fermentation (the so-called carboxylate platform) is one of the promising emerging biorefineries that allows valorising organic carbon to volatile fatty acids (VFA), which can be further processed as chemicals, biopolymers and biofuels. A major obstacle to the widespread of the carboxylate ...

In order to improve the MCC yield obtained from CSTR operation, an SBR operation was conducted varying the HRT aiming a greater caproate and caprilate production. On day 179, a yeast extraction in the feeding was assessed, and finally, on day 252, vitamins were also added in the feeding

When the pseudo-steady state was reached in every SBR operation (SBR HRT 4d (day 34), SBR HRT 2d (day 57), SBR HRT 1d (day 147), SBR HRT 2d+ye (day 253)) the cycle characterisation was performed monitoring the substrate and product evolution during the whole cycle with the aim of assessing the substrate consumption rate and the intermediate products which are produced during the cycle
