This is the abbreviated excel file used for the Thermotable calculations of Westerhoff et al (2026) FEBS J, in press entitled 'Metabolic thermodynamics: pertinent reference state and energy potentials' It is also Supplement S4 of that paper. As compared to the full file it addresses much fewer chemical species, but it does contain all the excel-based computation mechanisms, which are further explained in supplement S5 of the publication. The Table allows variously transformed and gauge-shifted ...

A Table of the standard metabolic potentials of over a thousand species and blends thereof, of biochemical importance, at two temperatures and 3 pHs. The Table is supplement S3 (Table 2) of _Westerhoff et al (2026) FEBS J. Metabolic thermodynamics: pertinent reference state and energy potentials. In that paper it is described how the metabolic potentials have been calculated from the standard chemical potentials of the corresponding chemical species.

These standard metabolic potentials are the ...

For more than a thousand chemical species of biological interest the table gives standard chemical, standard apparent chemical, and standard metabolic potentials:

  • Standard chemical potentials: extracted from various literature references (data sources indicated below the Table)
  • Standard apparent chemical potentials as the above standard chemical potentials but further transformed for H+ and ionic strength; for Alberty conditions (pH=7.14, pMg=3.57, I=0.25 M Osm=0 M) and for new biochemical ...

The first sheet in this excel file is a Table that collects the standard Gibbs energies of formation (from the elements) of a large number of chemical species that are relevant for metabolism. It obtained these from a substantial number of sources, including Thauer et al and Alberty, as indicated at the bottom of the first sheet of the Table. Following Alberty, (2006) the Table also computes the further transformed Gibbs energies of formation, under the standard conditions also used by Alberty, ...

Westerhoff H.V. and Van Dam K. (1987) Thermodynamics and control of biological free-energy transduction, Elsevier, Amsterdam ISBN: 0-444-80783-7 (U.S.)

This monograph gives the basis of both non equilibrium thermodynamics and metabolic control analysis in biology. It is rife with examples from bioenergetics.

It is also a compilation of mathematical equations and text and hence serves as a data file for mathematical biology and biological modelling
