The Col plants flowered early when treated with GA, as expected, mostly between day 28 and day 35 | |||||||||
The flowering risked complicating the biomass measurements at day 35, so the Col control plants tested for dry (and fresh) mass were the last 4 to be pre-flowering. | |||||||||
In hindsight, this sampling caused a severe bias towards the youngest i.e. smallest plants in only this genotype-treatment combination, whereas poorly-growing or outlier plants were avoided in normal sampling | |||||||||
GA did not appear to stimulate the biomass of Col in this biased sample, relative to the control, contradicting expectation from the literature. | |||||||||
However when the mean FW of all Col plants was included in the comparison (both for control and GA-treated; 'Full Sets'), not just the 5/4 with DW data, GA stimulated the biomass of Col in line with expectation, and of both Col and prr7prr9 genotypes similarly | |||||||||
Therefore the mean water content of the 4 Col GA plants with DW data was applied to estimate DW for all the Col GA plants, to allow a less-biased comparison of DW in Col control versus GA | |||||||||
The early flowering of Col GA didn't affect the sampling of plants for metabolite measurements at day 28, as the plants hadn't flowered. | |||||||||
